Bible Story: Daniel's Good ChoiceReference: Daniel 1 It was a sad time. Israel the northern kingdom and Judah the southern kingdom had become so wicked that God removed his protecting hand. Israel was destroyed by Assyria. Some years later, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and God’s temple. He also took many captives from Judah to Babylon. Daniel and his 3 friends were among the captives taken to Babylon. They were chosen to go to a special school for future leaders. They decided that they would only worship God. Soon enough they had their first test of loyalty. King Nebuchadnezzar offered the young Jews in his school to eat his food and drink his wine. All of the young men said yes, except Daniel and his 3 friends. They knew the king’s meat had been offered to idols and the wine would hurt their brain. They asked the king for permission to eat only vegetables and water for 10 days. After that time, Daniel and his 3 friends looked so much healthier than the other young men that they were allowed to keep their special diet. When their training was complete, the king tested each student with hard questions. Daniel and his friends were wiser than the wisest men of Babylon. Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, Psalm 119:98, in which the Psalmist says to God, “Your commands make me wiser than my enemies because they are mine forever.” (ICB). Following God’s commandments, like Daniel, can make you wiser and healthier. God can help you make good choices when you decide in your heart to only follow Him and then obey Him when He reminds you of His special rules the 10 Commandments. Because Daniel was true to God, he and his friends were promoted to the highest levels of power in Babylon. God wants to train you for leadership, too. Will you make good choices? Dear Father God, I love Your commandments. Help me make good choices, so I can be wise like Daniel. In Jesus’ name, Amen
Nature Collection: Vegetables Daniel’s choice to eat lots of vegetables was good for his health and ours! Vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. Let’s learn why. Vegetables contain vitamins which help our body work properly. Vegetables also contain anti-oxidants that help our body fight disease. One important thing in vegetables is fiber. Fiber helps your body digest sugar properly. It helps clean your intestines. It also helps you not eat too much by making you feel fuller. What vegetables do you eat? - Broccoli, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, root vegetables like carrots! Technically, vegetables are foods from the roots, stems, and leaves of plants. But some foods we call vegetables are actually botanical fruits like peppers and squash. Fruits are the part of the plant that contains the seeds. In the end, God wants us to eat more plant-based food, like vegetables. Will you? Memory Mastery: Good ChoicesGod helps me make good choices. That means...
