Nature Journal: How Plants Survive the WinterGetting through winter is a challenge for plants because they have to be outside without any covering or heater during the coldest of nights. Plants that live through the winter are called perennials. Many perennial plants seem to die when frost comes. In fact, their leaves and stems might shrivel up. But, under the ground, you will find a living root and or a short living stem (called a rhizome). By allowing all or some of its above ground parts to die, the plant conserves enough energy to make it through the winter. Other plants, called annuals, completely die during the winter. But their kind comes back because while they were living, they made seeds. Those seeds wait patiently for the right conditions of water and heat to come alive. This happens during springtime, when we get lots of rain and the sun warms the ground. Before the winter of sin and misery entered the world, Jesus and the Father decided that if humankind sinned, Jesus would die in their place, so that we could have the chance to live forever. He had said early in His ministry, “Destroy this temple (His body), and in 3 days, I will raise it up.” That Word was a seed that Jesus planted with His death. No power in heaven or earth could keep that Word from coming true and bringing Him back to life. Memory Mastery: Old Testament TimelineThis quarter we are memorizing our Old Testament Timeline. Bible Story: Alive Again!Reference: Luke 24 1-2-3 Push! Jesus had just died. Now, his disciples were rolling a huge stone in front of the tomb in which His body was laid. The women who followed Jesus wanted to anoint His body for burial, but the Sabbath was about to start. They quickly marked the place where He was laid and determined to come back after Sabbath to finish their work. So, very early Sunday morning, the women who followed Jesus returned to the tomb. Oh no! The stone was rolled away, and He was gone! They worried someone had stolen His body. Suddenly, two angels appeared to them and said, “Jesus is alive again! Tell the disciples.” The women ran off to deliver the good news. Late that day, the disciples were gathered together in a room. Everyone was talking about the strange news, but they still had a hard time believing it fully. Suddenly, Jesus appeared in their midst. Everyone was surprised and a bit scared. But Jesus said, “Feel my hands and feet, and see that it is really Me.” After Jesus ate some food, He opened the scriptures and explained to them, “As I taught you before, the scriptures say that the Christ would suffer, die, and rise from the dead on the third day. You will tell the world My story and offer My gift of forgiveness of sin. Wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.” Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, John 11:25, which says, “Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live" (NKJV). Resurrection means to come back to life. Even though Jesus died, He came back to life. Jesus gives eternal life to those who love Him. Eternal life is a forever friendship with God that we can start right now! Dear Father God, I believe in the resurrection of Jesus. I want to have a forever friendship with You. In Jesus' Name, Amen
