Nature Corner: White Blood CellsHave you heard of white blood cells? They are in your blood and go everywhere your blood goes in your body searching for things that make you sick, like bacteria, viruses, allergies, and cancer. When they find a pathogen, they destroy it. White blood cells remind me of what David said to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45, "I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel." Besides God's heavenly army of angels that surround us, God has placed an army of white blood cells inside of us to help us fight sickness. Let's remember to trust and thank God for all of His special armies! Memory Mastery: God's Special BookWe are memorizing facts about God's special book, the Bible. As you listen along, look at a Bible. See if you can answer the questions below.
Mission Mail: Christmas for EveryoneDear Patterson Kids, My name is Martina, and I work for ADRA - our church organization that helps people around the world in practical ways. Last fall, we sent empty boxes to churches all around Austria, so people could pack them with Christmas gifts for children in Albania and Latvia, who are very poor. At Christmas time, do you remember the poor? Sincerely, Martina Bible Story: David and GoliathReferences: 1 Samuel 17 and 18; PP 644-650 The wicked Philistines were bothering the Israelites again. For 40 days, they sent a mean giant out to scare the Israelites in the valley of Elah in Judah. The giant's name was Goliath. He said terrible things about the God of Israel. He told the Israelites to send one person out to fight him, but all the Israelites were scared. Back in Bethlehem, Jesse told his youngest son, David, to go out to battle to see how his brothers were doing and to bring them some food. When David got to the battle, he heard the giant saying mean things about God. "Who is the wicked Philistine that says such terrible things about the God of heaven?" David asked. "His name is Goliath," they answered, "and King Saul wants a man to go out and fight him, but we are all too scared." Then David went to King Saul and said, "God has helped me fight a lion and a bear who tried to hurt my sheep. God will help me fight this Philistine." So, David went back to the battle with his slingshot and grabbed 5 smooth stones from the brook nearby. When Goliath saw David coming to him, the giant laughed and cursed God. David called out to him, "I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel. Everyone today will know that God wins the battle." David put one stone in his slingshot and flung it at the giant. The stone hit the giant in the forehead and he fell down dead. Then the rest of the Israelite army chased the Philistines away. Our prayer verse, 1 Samuel 17:45, says, "I come to you in the name of the Lord of heaven's armies. He's the God of the armies of Israel" (ICV). David was not afraid of Goliath because he knew God would help him fight and God's army was with him. What are you afraid of?
Dear Father God, You have a big army of angels that surround me and help me. I will trust in You. In Jesus' Name, Amen

Nature Corner: MushroomsThere are special people who go in the woods to find mushrooms you can eat. They are called mushroom hunters. Mushroom hunters have to very good at telling edible mushrooms apart from poisonous ones, so they train for a long time under experienced mushroom hunters until they can go out on their own. For example, the very young green-spored parasol mushroom looks like the button mushrooms we eat, but it is poisonous. Many people end up in the hospital trying to eat them. The poisonous false morel mushroom looks like the edible morel mushrooms. Then, there is the toxic jack-o-lantern mushroom that looks like the gourmet, edible chanterelle mushroom. The work of the mushroom hunter reminds me of the Bible verse, 1 Samuel 15:22, which says, "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice." King Saul made bad decisions that he thought were good ones because he didn't obey the Lord EXACTLY. Imagine if he were out picking mushrooms with an experienced mushroom hunter and didn't want to listen to their advice. It is always better to obey God in every detail than to disobey in little things. Memory Mastery: God's Special BookWe are learning all kinds of interesting facts about God's special book, the Bible. Mission Mail: A Boy, a Book, and a BlessingDear Patterson Kids, My name is Kylian, and I live in France. One day, two young ladies came to visit my mother outside our house. They were smoking cigarettes, so I told them, "You shouldn't smoke. Smoking can give you cancer." They smiled at me and kept talking. So, I ran inside the house and found a book on taking care of your body. I gave it to the two ladies and went to go ride my bike. When the young ladies came by the next day, I asked them to go to church with us, and they said yes! They liked church, and now they want to be baptized and follow Jesus. Don't be afraid to share God's love with others, ok? Sincerely, Kylian Bible Story: God Chooses a New KingReferences: 1 Samuel 16; PP 631-644 Samuel was sad that Saul had been rejected by the Lord, but the Lord wanted to find a new king that would listen and obey. "Go to Jesse's house in Bethlehem and anoint the man that I show you to be the new king over Israel," God said. So, Samuel went to Bethlehem. Jesse had many sons, and introduced each one to prophet Samuel. When Samuel saw Eliab, Jesse's oldest son, he thought, "This must be the new king. He is so tall and strong." But God said, "Don't make a judgement about someone because of their appearance. I look at their heart." When all the sons present passed by, Samuel asked Jesse if there were any more. So, Jesse sent for his youngest son David, who was out in the pasture taking care of the sheep. When David came before Samuel, the Lord said, "This is the one. He will listen to me and follow my directions. Anoint him!" So, Samuel poured oil on David's head, and the Holy Spirit filled him with power. King Saul was very troubled by the evil spirit that bothered him. Someone suggested that he call for David who could play the harp and sing for him, and Saul agreed. When David played music for Saul, the evil spirit left him and he felt better. Our prayer verse is Proverbs 8:33, which says, "Listen to my teaching, and you will be wise" (ICV). God chose David because he knew David would listen to the Holy Spirit who gives us wisdom to make good choices. Do you listen to the Holy Spirit's lessons in these Bible stories? God has also given us our parents to help us make good choices. Do you listen to your parents and obey?
