Bible Story: The Shepherd KingReference: 1 Samuel 16; 2 Samuel 7 After many battles, the Israelites settled into their new land. They wanted to be like other nations and have a man as a their king instead of God. God was not happy with their request, but He allowed them to have King Saul. When Saul disobeyed God many times, God told prophet Samuel to anoint a new king. “Go to Jesse’s house in Bethlehem. There you will find the new king I have chosen to lead My people Israel.” Samuel invited Jesse and his sons to special sacrifice to God. Jesse called his 7 older sons. Samuel wondered which one was God’s chosen man. “Don’t look at how handsome someone is. I look at the heart,” God said. As each one passed by, God told Samuel, “This is NOT the one.” Samuel asked Jesse, “Do you have any other sons?” Jesse replied, “The youngest is out in the field with the sheep.” Samuel said, “Call him.” When David arrived, God said, “This is the one!” Samuel poured oil on David’s head. Then the Holy Spirit filled David from then on. When David was king over Israel, he asked God how lead his people. He led his people to worship God. He loved God so much he wanted to build a house for God. Prophet Nathan told him a special message from God: “David, your son will build a house for Me, and your Descendant will rule over My kingdom forever.” Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, 1 Samuel 16:7, in which God told Samuel, “God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (ICB). When it was time for God to pick a new king for Israel, He chose shepherd boy who loved Him, trusted Him, and obeyed Him. Even though David was the smallest of his brothers, He was the greatest in God’s eyes. When prophet Nathan gave David the promise that his son would be king forever, he was talking about Jesus – one of David’s descendants! God has chosen you to be part of Jesus’ special kingdom. Dear Father God, You can see my heart. Look inside and take away my sin. I want to give my whole heart to you! In Jesus’ Name, Amen Nature: Follow the LeaderWhen animals live together in groups, usually there is a leader. Sometimes the leader is a female, like the queen bee. Other times the leader is a male, like the pride lion. Sometimes the leader is chosen from birth, like the queen bee. Other times the leader has to prove him or herself the best or biggest among the group, like the pride lion. In the animal kingdom, leadership doesn’t necessarily mean telling the other group members what to do. Sometimes leadership is taking care of the whole family, guiding the group to the next feeding area, or being the mommy or daddy of everyone. Good leaders look out for the best interests of their group. This is true with people, too. Our Bible story is about God’s choice for a new leader in Israel. God didn’t choose the biggest or oldest brother. He chose David, the youngest and smallest brother who dedicated himself to taking good care of his sheep. If you are faithful in doing all your duties and look out for others around you, God may choose you to be a leader someday!
