Visitation Guidelines
Visiting the nursing home is a great family-friendly ministry to do with the children.
Below are some guidelines to follow when you come.
Below are some guidelines to follow when you come.
- Do not come if anyone in your family is sick. These dear souls are generally in fragile health. We cannot expose them unnecessarily to germs.
- Bring hand sanitizer with you and use it after visiting each person, so that you do not pass on germs to others.
- Please remind children to speak up, look people in the eye, and smile. Nursing home residents LOVE meeting children.
- If you want to bring gifts, non-food gifts are preferred because residents may be on special diets. Residents do appreciate handmade cards. Useful gifts include grippy socks, lap blankets, puzzle books, mail stationary, stuffed animals, silk flowers, etc.
- The best gift you can give is a nice conversation. Other fun ideas for residents is to bring a simple game to play or a book to read.
- If the door is closed, do not knock or try to come in. A nurse or aid may be attending to the resident. Only approach rooms that are open. Stick your head in, smile, and wave. Ask if you can say hello. Almost 100% will smile back and say yes!
- Teach your child a simple greeting to say to each person. "Hi, my name is __. What is your name? It's nice to meet you!"
- Keep visits short to not tire residents.
- Upon leaving, feel free to offer prayer - "May I pray with you?" Respect whichever way the resident responds.
- I recommend keeping a little log of whom you visited, so when you return, you can stop back by.
