Nature Window: Spinning Earth, Solar EclipseEven though you can’t feel it, our earth is moving in a great big slightly oval-shaped path around the sun, called an orbit. It takes about 365 days (or 1 year) to go around the sun. While the earth is making a circle around the sun, it is also spinning on its own axis while it is slightly tilted! Can you try to move like that? Whoa! I’d be pretty dizzy. It takes the earth around 24 hours (or 1 day) to spin around on its axis. The moon is moving in a circle around the earth, too. It takes the moon about 27 days (or 1 month) to orbit the earth. Depending on where you are at on earth, you can experience a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is a short moment when the moon moves directly in front of the earth – blocking the sun. The sky turns dark, like nighttime. Then, a few moments later, it is light again! When Jesus died on the cross, it was the darkest and saddest day in the history of this universe. But like a solar eclipse, that moment of darkness and sadness was soon to end. Jesus and the Father would soon rejoice together in His resurrection! Memory Mastery: New Testament TimelineThis quarter, while we are learning the stories from Jesus' life, we will memorize the New Testament events from our Bible timeline. Children who memorize their New Testament timeline will earn a Bible artifact to add to their collection. All they need to do is fill in the blanks.
Mission Trip: A New Hospital WingThis quarter we are helping our brothers and sisters in the Inter-American Division share Jesus with the people there. One special mission project is adding classrooms and a clinic to our hospital in Mexico. Will you bring your coins all quarter long to donate to the world church mission projects? This month, let's learn some facts about the tropical rain forest, a biome in Mexico. Bible Story: Behold, the Lamb of God!Reference: Luke 23 The Passover festivities were in full swing in Jerusalem, but behind the scenes, the Jewish Leaders had turned Jesus in to the Roman authorities to be put to death. “He made Himself king over Caesar,” they said to Pontius Pilate – the Roman governor. “He teaches the people to follow bad things,” they lied. “Crucify him!” Even though Pilate found no guilt in Jesus, he gave in to the demands of the Jewish rulers and ordered Jesus to be put to death by crucifixion on Friday. On a hillside called Calvary, Jesus was placed on a cross to die, along with two thieves on either side. Multitudes in Jerusalem came out to see the crucifixion. Some made fun of Jesus. Others cried. Jesus’ disciples and mother were heart broken. Jesus looked lovingly on each person there. In the midst of terrible pain, Jesus prayed to God, “Father, forgive them, because they don’t know what they are doing.” The sun got very dark as God the Father drew near to His dying Son. At 3 PM, Jesus exclaimed, “It is finished!” By dying on the cross for our sins, Jesus was finishing His work as the Lamb of God. As He took His last breath, He prayed, “Into Your hands, I give my spirit.” In spite of the darkness around Him, in faith, Jesus hung His head and died in the arms of His Father’s love. Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, Romans 5:8, which says, “God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (ESV). It was so hard for God the Father to see and allow His Son Jesus to die. But, He and Jesus had agreed long ago that they loved us so much that they would rather suffer than not spend eternity with us. Because of Jesus’ death, we can live forever with Them. Dear Father God, I see Your great love for me in sending Jesus to die for my sins. I want to live forever with You and Jesus. In Jesus' Name, Amen
