Bible Story: The 10 CommandmentsReference: Exodus 19, 20, 24, 31:18 After the Israelites left Egypt, they wandered 3 months in the wilderness and arrived at Mount Sinai. Moses told the people, “Get ready to meet with God. Do not come near the mountain till you hear the trumpet sound. And do not touch it. God wants to make you His special people. He has a special agreement to offer you.” In 3 days, God descended onto Mount Sinai in fire. The fire was so big that the smoke filled the mountain. God’s presence shook the mountain. There was thunder and lightning. The people were afraid. The trumpet sounded for a long time. The people drew near. Then God spoke the 10 Commandments so all the people could hear. “I freed you from bondage in Egypt with signs and wonders. As my special people, you will serve no other god but Me. You will not make idols. You will say my name in a respectful way. You will work 6 days and keep the 7th day Sabbath holy. You will respect your parents. You will not murder. You will be true to your spouse. You will not steal. You will not tell lies. You will not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.” The people told Moses to tell God, “We will do everything God says in the agreement.” God accepted the people’s promise. Later, God wrote with His finger the 10 commandments on 2 tablets of stone and gave them to Moses. Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, Matthew 22:37,39, in which Jesus explains what the 10 commandments mean. He says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.... Love your neighbor as you love yourself. (ICB). God’s 10 Commandments are laws of love. They help us get along with other people and have a good relationship with God. We cannot do them on our own, but the Holy Spirit can write them on our hearts and help us do them. Dear Father God, please send me your Holy Spirit to write your law of love on my heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
