Bible Story: Nebuchadnezzar's Strange DreamReference: Daniel 2 King Nebuchadnezzar woke up from a very strange dream. “Wise men,” he demanded, “tell me what the dream was and what it meant.” All the wise men, fortune tellers, and wizards could not tell the king his dream. “Only the gods can do that!” they exclaimed. King Nebuchadnezzar was so angry that he ordered his captain to kill all the wise men in his kingdom. Daniel and his three friends were wise men in Babylon. When Captain Arioch explained the angry message to Daniel, Daniel said, “Just give me a little time, and I will tell the king about his dream.” So, Captain Arioch agreed. Immediately, Daniel went home to his three friends. “Let’s pray to God in heaven and ask Him to show us this secret,” Daniel said. They all knelt and prayed to God. That night, God gave Daniel a vision of the dream that the king had. God showed Daniel what the dream meant. Daniel and his friends praised God for showing them the secret. Daniel hurried to tell King Nebuchadnezzar what the dream was and what it meant. He said, “Only the God in heaven can tell secrets. He gave you the dream to show you that He gave you your kingdom and power. There will be other kingdoms after you. Finally, God will set up His kingdom forever.” Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, Jeremiah 29:11, in which God says, “I know what I have planned for you....I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future.” (ICB). Through Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar learned that the God in heaven knows the future and shapes the future. The future is what is going to happen tomorrow, a month from now, or many years from now. God has good plans for each of us that we can discover when we follow Him day by day through obeying His word. He even turns the sad times in life into blessings when we trust in Him. Dear Father God, Help me spend time with You each day in Your Word, so I can discover the great plans you have for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen Nature Collection: Matter Nebuchadnezzar’s dream was indeed very strange. He dreamed about a big statue made of different types of materials. The head was made out of gold. The chest was silver. The thighs were bronze. The legs were iron. The feet were iron and clay. A great stone was cut out of a mountain and hit the statue at the feet. The whole statue exploded into tiny pieces that the wind carried all away. The stone was the only thing left. It became a big mountain that filled the entire earth. Like the statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, everything is this world that is made up of stuff and takes up space is called matter. We can describe matter by its size, shape, color, chemical composition (what kind of material it is – gold, silver, etc.), how much it weighs, where it is at, etc. Daniel talked about most of the characteristics of matter when he was describing different parts of the dream. Matter also exists in different phases. The statue was in the solid phase because it had a fixed shape and form. If you heat (add energy to) the materials in the statue, you can change its phase to liquid. If you heat a liquid, you can turn it into a gas. Mission Mail: A Hospital for KenyaDuring December we especially think of the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ. When He walked on earth he spent more time healing than preaching. We can have a part in Jesus' healing work. This quarter the World Church is building a hospital in Kenya. Bring your coins all quarter long to donate to this awesome project extending Jesus' healing ministry in Africa.
