Nature Journal: How Plants Survive the Winter

Getting through winter is a challenge for plants because they have to be outside without any covering or heater during the coldest of nights.  Plants that live through the winter are called perennials.
Many perennial plants seem to die when frost comes.  In fact, their leaves and stems might shrivel up.  But, under the ground, you will find a living root and or a short living stem (called a rhizome).  By allowing all or some of its above ground parts to die, the plant conserves enough energy to make it through the winter.

Other plants, called annuals, completely die during the winter.  But their kind comes back because while they were living, they made seeds.  Those seeds wait patiently for the right conditions of water and heat to come alive.  This happens during springtime, when we get lots of rain and the sun warms the ground.

Before the winter of sin and misery entered the world, Jesus and the Father decided that if humankind sinned, Jesus would die in their place, so that we could have the chance to live forever. He had said early in His ministry, “Destroy this temple (His body), and in 3 days, I will raise it up.” That Word was a seed that Jesus planted with His death.  No power in heaven or earth could keep that Word from coming true and bringing Him back to life.

Memory Mastery: Old Testament Timeline

This quarter we are memorizing our Old Testament Timeline.  Children who can fill in the blanks from memory will receive a Torah scroll to add to their Bible artifact collection.
  1. In the beginning, God made everything. Genesis 1 and 2
  2. Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit. Genesis 3
  3. God told Noah to build an ark, because He was sending a flood to wash the earth. Genesis 6 to 9
  4. God chose the patriarchs to start the family of faith on earth – Abraham, Isaac, then Jacob.  Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. Genesis 12 to 36
  5. The children of Israel became slaves in Egypt, but God freed them. Ex. 1 to 15
  6. Moses received the 10 Commandments. Exodus 24 and 31:18
  7. God showed Moses the sanctuary in heaven, so Moses could build the sanctuary on earth.  The sanctuary service teaches us how God saves us from sin. Exodus 25 to 31
  8. The baby nation of Israel was 1st governed by judges.  During the time of the judges, God was supposed to be Israel’s King. Joshua, Judges, Ruth
  9. When Samuel was Israel’s prophet and judge, Israel wanted to be like other nations and have a man as their king.  One special king God gave Israel was king David. 1 Sam. 16. God told David that Jesus would be born from his family. 2 Sam. 7
  10. David’s son, Solomon, build God’s temple on earth. 1 Kings 6. Israel split into 2 nations, Israel in the north and Judah in the south.  King David’s children were in charge of Judah. 1,2 Kings and 1,2 Chronicles
  11. Unfortunately, most of the kings of Israel and Judah were very wicked.  God sent many prophets to His people to warn them of their sins.
  12. Finally, God allowed Israel to be destroyed by Assyria and Judah to be exiled to Babylon. 2 Kings 17, Daniel 1
  13. The children of Judah were called Jews.  When they repented of their sins, God sent them back to their country to rebuild the city of Jerusalem. Ezra, Nehemiah

Bible Story: Alive Again!

Reference: Luke 24
1-2-3 Push! Jesus had just died. Now, his disciples were rolling a huge stone in front of the tomb in which His body was laid.  The women who followed Jesus wanted to anoint His body for burial, but the Sabbath was about to start.  They quickly marked the place where He was laid and determined to come back after Sabbath to finish their work.

So, very early Sunday morning, the women who followed Jesus returned to the tomb.  Oh no! The stone was rolled away, and He was gone! They worried someone had stolen His body.  Suddenly, two angels appeared to them and said, “Jesus is alive again! Tell the disciples.”  The women ran off to deliver the good news.

Late that day, the disciples were gathered together in a room.  Everyone was talking about the strange news, but they still had a hard time believing it fully.  Suddenly, Jesus appeared in their midst.  Everyone was surprised and a bit scared.
But Jesus said, “Feel my hands and feet, and see that it is really Me.” After Jesus ate some food, He opened the scriptures and explained to them, “As I taught you before, the scriptures say that the Christ would suffer, die, and rise from the dead on the third day. You will tell the world My story and offer My gift of forgiveness of sin. Wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.”

Later that day, Jesus appeared to His disciples. They were so surprised. But, Jesus reminded them that His whole story is in the Bible. Can you put your hands together like a book? Courtesy of Sweet Publishing and FreeBibleImages.org
Our Bible story reminds me of the prayer verse, John 11:25, which says, “Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live" (NKJV).  Resurrection means to come back to life.  Even though Jesus died, He came back to life. Jesus gives eternal life to those who love Him. Eternal life is a forever friendship with God that we can start right now!
Dear Father God, I believe in the resurrection of Jesus.  I want to have a forever friendship with You.  In Jesus' Name, Amen
